wickedwords - feedback challenge
I was assigned to read
wickedwords work which can be found at her Rachael Sabotini’s House ‘O Fanfic. I had never read any of her writing before and was pleasantly surprised to discover both her Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean fiction sections.
Small Kindness (Harry Potter)
This story is a great look inside the character of Neville Longbottom. Him and his feelings about his professor and the world around him. Something that tends to be lacking in fanfiction where he isn’t paired off with another major character or tends to be overwrought with the sort of “woe is me” tendency. Small Kindness manages to deliver on the odd premise that Neville sneaks into visit Professor Lockhart after the events at the end of Chamber of Secrets have transpired.
Through Neville’s single desire to deliver a small gift to his professor, we get a glimpse at the things Neville wishes he had more of. Confidence, respect, and the ability to fix things:
“Nothing in Neville's experience said that other people looked out for you like that. Yet when Lockhart was around, Neville could almost believe that someone would come and get him out of the mess he'd made, or even that he would be able to fix it on his own. He knew his skills were horrible, yet Lockhart had acted as if Neville could do anything the other students could, from writing an essay to banishing a pixie. It was odd to have a teacher confident in his skills. It was even odder that when Lockhart had been around, Neville had believed it too…”
And the last paragraph really made me enjoy this story so much. Neville planning to visit Lockhart at St. Mungo’s, not so much for the professor’s benefit, but his own. To actually have someone to share a full conversation with, which if the reader’s read OOTP knows is because his parents are unable to do that with him.
Sacramental Wine (Pirates of the Caribbean)
I was hooked from the first paragraph as Will Turner prepares for his wedding to Elizabeth. This story has an interesting premise. The idea that Will is now entering civilized society, only to have Jack show up during the ceremony and offer both Will and Elizabeth further “uncivilized” adventures upon the Black Pearl as crew.
The best part of this was the setting and the descriptive feel of emotions.
“The very day of his wedding, and still he was doubting. Elizabeth was a fine woman, and he loved her more than he loved the feel of steel in his hand. She was like a perfectly weighted blade, balanced precisely for him, ready to twist and turn with the unexpected. They suited each other, and no matter what thoughts flitted though his mind sometimes, this was the best course.”
That is the best description of Elizabeth via Will’s eyes that I’ve ever read.
The dialogue is also dead on for the characters, especially Jack.
"Polite to a pirate?" Elizabeth finally turned her head away. "I think not."
"But I'm more than a pirate, aren't I, luv?" He leaned over so his head almost rested on Elizabeth's shoulder. "I'm Captain Jack Sparrow."
This is a story that definitely has possibilities in regarded to where the canon ended and I could definitely see how both Elizabeth and Will would try their hardest to ignore Jack’s offer, but run off in the end. For, as Jack says in the story, “Land life's no kind of a life for…" them.
Both stories provided me with some quality fiction that I had yet to discover. I now have a new page to add to my favorites and I would definitely recommend checking out these stories and the others located on
wickedword's website because they're definitely worth the read.
