sticking with my goal to post more frequently...

I got my assignment for the [community profile] ante_up_losers Fanworks Exchange and realized I should go write my Dear Creator letter that just had a placeholder. I figured I've read enough fic in this world that maybe it's time to try my hand at it. Also, since I'm trying to complete the 75,000 words this year, I figure having projects with deadlines might help me along with that.   Love some of the prompts I saw on the Dear Creator letter for my recipient so that's good.

I also got my picture for [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000 and excited to write that.  Just need to pic my fandom - what am I feeling everyone?  Ideas?

I went to see Star Wars again with my sister the other day and I still quite enjoy it. That is all I shall say in case people still haven't seen it. Even when we went the other day the theater was still packed.

I also finished Making a Murderer on Netflix because my co-worker kept yelling at me to watch it since I love the Serial podcast. I really shouldn't have watched it because it just made me angry about some of the crap that went down.

After finishing it, I read some of the stuff I had seen on the internet about the case and the show.  It seems most people really believe it's likely Steve Avery killed the woman....or someone in his family did. Even as I watched, I wasn't sure he was innocent, but I don't really think the point is to be about "this guy is innocent and this needs correcting" so much as "this case was handled badly and they shouldn't have been found guilty on the cases presented.  There was obvious misuse of power by a number of people in the legal system. Especially for the sixteen year old, low IQ kid who not only got coerced into talking to the police (whether what he ended up saying was true or not) and then his own lawyer did nothing to defend him, but make him look worse. I'm not a lawyer, but it seemed like maybe this guy got his law degree from University of Barbados or something because really?

And then I kept wondering...you served eighteen years for a crime you didn't commit because the police and the system were unfair...and you just gave people access to your home and answered questions without lawyers and...why?    If anyone should be like, "I don't care if it makes me look guilty, nothing is happening without lawyers and warrants,"  I would think it would be him and his family.

I think it just says a lot about our justice system and the belief of not only innocent until proven guilty sort of being thrown out, especially in high profile cases that end up in the news, but that the reminder that the burden is on the prosecutor to make a case.   You're not supposed to enter into the trial with the idea that it's the defense that has to have all the answers.

I find myself thinking about it the same way I did of season one of Serial - where I think the person likely did the crime they were convicted for (or played a part in it that they won't admit), but they shouldn't have been found guilty and the things that happened within the lead-up and during the trial were suspect. And it's definitely highlighted that this system is not fair and can too easily be manipulated.

Oscar nominations are out and I've seen four of the eight already:  Martian (loved), Spotlight (good but depressing as hell), Mad Max (I was so confused - I had never seen any of the other Mad Max movies and my friend insisted I see and Tom Hardy, so sure...but I spent the first half of the movie going "what is going on?"), and the Big Short (I had read the book and the movie does a good job of sort of breaking down the whole thing - it's just depressing because nothing has changed).

I still need to see The Revenant, Room, Brooklyn and Bridge of Spies.

Finally caught back up on Arrow - I forced myself to do it before I could watch the crossover Flash episode so I wouldn't be confused...so I'm caught up on both of those now.  Still behind on Empire and Gotham.   And just waiting (impatiently) for Walking Dead to return.

Currently in my Netflix/Amazon streaming I've been rewatching Stargate Atlantis with the goal to actually make it through the end of season four and five, which I had never finished.  And then I plan to move onto Supernatural.  Last episode I saw was the premiere of Season Eight.   Considering how much I used to love that show, it's kinda sad that I can't always muster up the urge to go back.  But I'm hoping once I do, I'll get sucked in and get through it.  Last time around I had stopped watching at start of season six and then finally decided before season eight to try to get caught up...ended up zipping through the episodes.

Okay, back to work to get done.  Feeling very sore from my workout this morning and contemplating what to do for lunch because I didn't bring anything and this way leads to madness.  I might just run to Whole Foods and grab something.
