It's probably the same reason I tend to utilize a girl who struggled to get away from her hometown. I think possibly we try to figure out what we could do/could have done differently to get us certain places. Our characters aren't going to react the same ways that we have, necessarily, and so we're trying to relegate our demons to them in some way, perhaps? I usually write the mother's in stories fairly similar to my own...maybe it's just introducing something of the familiar to a fictional place?
