I anticipate a lot of fans not being as "squee" about this episode precisely because it did not bring the brother angst to the forefront, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good episode. Kripke was smart and started developing Jo rather than leaving her where she was (character depth-wise). I like her a lot more now because I've been given some substance for her.
Another person on my flist was upset at the perceived idea that the writers are kicking John when he's (dead) down. *My* take on it is we aren't done with that story yet. Once more, a parent reveals a secret to their child, and we are not allowed to hear what it is. We will find out, just not right now.
Jo said her dad died when she was pretty young. If she is close to Dean's age, that means he died when John was still early in his hunting career. My guess is her dad died, John felt so torn up about it since he was still very fresh off of Mary's death that he couldn't handle Ellen and Jo. He more than likely viewed it as 'I let someone close and it happened again.'
Ellen obviously blamed John, and for a very long time was more than happy to have him not around. Fast-forward another 15 years, and she's forgiven enough to contact John to help with the demon. I am pretty sure that's the rough timeline, and I am nearly 100% positive we will hear more on this. (Flashback potential? Hello! I just realized.)
