If it is true, yeah, I agree with your take on it: Things snowballed from an extreme overreaction to svmadelyn's reasonable request -- reasonable not only because hoaxes like this have happened before, but also because gift requests costing money were being made. But even politely refusing to give the hospital information in a public forum (because it is private, after all) would have looked less suspicious than the immediate cries of "You evil people, how dare you!" followed by shutting down all accounts.
