tommygirl: (house - alienate)
[personal profile] tommygirl
Steph has started an "I hate Frankie McCauley" club. I think I'm flattered. To know that one of my characters has caused such an impact on her that she's forming a club. That said, I also worry that Frankie is a bit two-dimensional, which he probably is at this point because of how the story is told and how we don't really understand his motivations beyond winning...don't get me wrong. Frankie is not a sweet guy. It's not in his nature, but I don't see him as inherently evil either...and I envision him to be quite hot. But that's just me.

As for the next update of Trouble In My Head...I've got an engagement party and film class this weekend, so the update might not be until next week, but we'll see. It depends on if I get a flow going or choose to go see The Punisher like I originally intended.

1. What's your fandom(s)?

Currently? I write in Nsync, Orlando Bloom, Alias, Roswell, Charmed, Joan of Arcadia, Xmen, and Pirates of the Caribbean…occasionally, I will dabble in writing Harry Potter, but it’s rare I share such things. Reading? All of the above plus Sports Night, Firefly, and West Wing.

2. 'Ship of preference?

harry/draco (HP), pyro/rogue (X-men), syd/sark (Alias)

3. Any other pairings you like?

In which fandom? There are so many…will/jack, will/elizabeth, jc/lance, casey/dan, donna/josh, syd/vaughn, draco/ginny, joan/adam, michael/maria, anything Kyle of Roswell, anything Chris of Charmed, oh and lately, I’ve developed a strange JC Chasez/Orlando Bloom fixation.

4. What pairings will you absolutely not read (or write) if you can help it?

In Harry Potter, I’d have to say the incest fics are more than mildly disturbing to me and anything with like Dumbledore and harry. Ew.

5. What type of fic do you prefer to read and/or write? (i.e. canon fic, darkfic, total au, etc)

I prefer romantic comedies—if they’re good, I don’t care if it’s AU or Canon as long as the characters are believable—but I’ve been known to bring the angst.

6. What type of fic don't you like? (genre wise)

First, I’d say that if you haven’t done a basic edit for grammar/spelling or you write in one big paragraph or phrase dialogue like this:

Chris: what do you want from me?

Leo: To be your father.

That annoys the fuck out of me. That’s not how you format a story. Leave experimenting with style and such until you’re very experienced and can pull it off.

Second, over-the-top romance. I know there is a market for it—go to any book store for proof—but I hate it. I don’t want boys who see into my soul or feel my “essence”. Oh, and I hate slash where a character is turned into some big girl—like Steph [livejournal.com profile] iamtheenemy made me read this horrifying West Wing story about Sam/Toby and it turned Toby into this completely…sickeningly sweet guy…like he called Sam “cupcake” and such…and can you see that? I definitely can’t without my stomach turning.

My third and final somewhat builds on the last one. You have to be true to your characters. For example, I love Draco. I believe that there are layers to Draco that JK Rowling has left untouched (whether purposely or not, I don’t know) and that allows the fanfiction writer plenty to draw on. The good Draco writers like Maya and Cassie still maintain Draco’s meanness to an extent. He’s not an angel—that doesn’t mean he can’t have feelings. But if an author were to turn Draco into this wishy-washy sort of sentimental fool? I wouldn’t buy it because his character has been built so to state that would go against his nature.

7. Do you read (or write) fics with NC-17 material? If yes, do you ONLY read/write NC-17 fics?

I’ll read some…unless it’s Harry Potter having sex. I just can’t do it. I’ll skim those parts if it’s a story I’m invested in—it’s just…ick. It’s my personal freak-out thing because I picture Harry Potter like a little brother and ew.

8. What are your biggest fic turnoffs?

See my answer to number 6. Bad writing. If someone is a great writer, I find that they can have you enjoy a pairing you might not normally or get away with more things than others. It’s all about being fresh and evocative.

9. Name one fic that you've read numerous times:

I tend not to read fanfiction more than once. Not because I don’t enjoy it, but I don’t have the time and I tend to like the really long ones…so to sit and reread it…would be insane. I will admit though that from time to time I’ll put out a copy of Clandestine Desires – the first JC/Lance slash that I read – on my harddrive and skim it.

10. If you write, what is one of your favorite fics that you've written

Um…complete = Reinventions because one of my big weaknesses with my writing is description and I think I managed to overcome it a bit there…where the description fits the moment and is neither too overt or lacking.

Incomplete? I’m rather fond of Whatever because I love Lizzie. I love writing her and I love where this story has taken me.

Okay, I need some sleep. or caffeine. I should probably inject it right into my veins since I'm at work and they might look unkindly on snoozing at my desk.
