I should be finishing up my Super Summer story, but instead, I decided to do that fanfiction writing meme that is going around the friends list.
Fanfiction Writers Meme:
Keyboard or biro? Both. I prefer keyboard simply because I can type faster than I can write things longhand and it gives me a chance to keep up with my brain. But I always have a notebook with me to write down notes, ideas, and random bits of stories as they come to me.
Beta or no beta? I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never posted without a beta. Sometimes I do if I’m rushed for a deadline. But I prefer a beta. No matter how many times I read over my own stories, no matter if I close the document and come back a few hours later, I always miss things that my betas catch. Plus, I have two fabulous constant betas – Steph and Jen – who don’t hold the punches and I love that.
Plot? I would love to write plot intrinsic story, but it’s so not my cup of tea. I think the closest I’ve come to a heavy plot is with my Roswell WIP, A New Journey. I’m a character writer. I have a basic idea when I set out of my character and the journey I was him/her to take…and from there, the character tends to dictate my first draft. Characters are what make me love any fandom, so that’s why I tend to love those stories that really dig into who that person is more than anything else.
Title? I am TERRIBLE at titles. The best titles I’ve ever used were usually thought up by others. My betas can attest that I consistently badger them for ideas for a title. There has only been one time where this didn’t occur in my life. For one of my screenplays, I had this title pop into my head and the whole story formed out of that title. That never happened before that time and hasn’t happened again since.
Smushy or smutty? Smushy. I love the smushy and the fluffy (without being sappy because I don’t want to have to poke my own eyes out). I love *reading* smutty stories, but I can’t really write them very well. My smut comes out clinical and that’s not exactly hot.
Summary? I’m not too bad at these with normal things. I get into trouble with fanfiction because if it’s based off an episode, I don’t want to spoil anything in the summary and such.
Funniest fic? Most insane that people seemed to think was funny - Oops I Hit Your Baby One More Time, the final installment in the stalker trilogies, featuring Nsync and Backstreet Boys. I think what amuses me most about that is that when I started the first installment is was really for my friends…involving a lot of private jokes and stuff, but somehow people seemed to like it’s insanity (I guess the idea of Nick Carter trying to kill Nsync off in a battle to be the best boyband ever…well, it appeals to people. ::rolls eyes::).
More recently, people seem to find my West Wing Story, Republicans End the World…Accidentally, amusing.
Most popular fic? Considering I still get feedback on it from time to time (okay, so it’s usually along with a note inquiring to when I will be updating Trouble In My Head), I’m going with Rhythm and Blues, a Justin story. I still can’t believe how popular that story became back when it was written, but I can’t deny that I love that people enjoyed it that much.
Best and Worst? Best story…I’m pretty fond of how my Supernatural story, This is the Way the World Ends, turned out. Considering I was in the midst of moving and my life was chaos and I basically wrote the whole thing in one quick sitting…Steph said it must’ve done my creative juices well, so maybe she’s right.
Worst story…many eons ago, I wrote a JC/OFC story called The Boyfriend Swap (it’s very Sweet Valley High of a title) and it is so bad. And it makes me cringe. And I keep it up as a reminder that I have, in fact, gotten better at writing.
Coulda been Contenders? I’m not sure I understand. Is this stories that I’ve written that I allowed to go hideously wrong somewhere? Or is this stories that I think were great but didn’t seem to get noticed once I posted it. I’m the worst judge of both of those things and have no idea how to answer. I mean, sometimes I wish some of my smaller fandoms had more of an audience than they do, but I think there are like ten us of that want more Veritas: The Quest Fic. Honestly.
Strengths? I’m great with characters and dialogue. My college writing advisor used to tell me how it is so hard for most writers to grasp how to use dialogue properly…
Weaknesses? …of course, I apparently suck at the stuff that every writer just *knows* how to do like great description and settings. That’s right. I’m a writing idiot savant. It’s definitely the reason most of my stories are heavy on character growth and lots of dialogue/banter because every bit of setting and such is so much harder for me to write well.
Dirty Little Secrets? I have such trouble getting a story started. So I tend to open up a book to any random chapter and use the first line to start my story. I end up removing it once I get a flow and premise and story down, but it really helps to get me through the block of a good opening line right at the beginning of writing.

Oh, and I suck at picking titles too. I have to ask my son to help out sometimes. Some of his answers are hilarious! LOL
