Family - losing family, what makes up a family, etc is a big theme for me. I know it comes out of my father dying when I was eleven and the way my own family disintegrated in many ways - I was always using my writing to explore and sometimes create the fathers and brothers and relationships that one could want. As I've gotten older, I try more to grapple with the "we're all human" aspect mixed in with the "this person needs me to be this for them" idea of things.

I also love the journey of life - how each person defines happiness and success, figuring things out, etc.

In regards to fanfiction, it tends to be the what if ideas of something from the canon or even if I read a good fanfic - sometimes my mind wonders "But what if this happened instead or if you took this and went here..." I think that's part of why I used to love the remix challenges (I still like them, I just have little time). I also ten to just love certain characters such a large amount that I like happy things to happen to them. And then, of course, I have my own personal issues that I like to work out through writing - so I've always had a huge attachment to close sibling relationships and dysfunctional parent-child relationships or situations where a kid lost a parent young - all things I've just always related too.

In regards to my regular writing, I joined a writer's group in my area and that really helped in the sense of I had this time for writing and nothing else. And talking about things with people who understand would often get my creativity going. Mostly, for me, it's about just letting my mind go and to start writing and not worry about what's coming out at first. I never tend to get a "this idea from point a to b to c." I'll get the idea for a character and if I just let myself sort it out long enough it can start to take form that way.

I'm exactly the same. I think probably 90% of my stories start exactly like that. And yes, it's also why I love remixes.

I used to think that I didn't bring any of my own life into my writing, but as I've gotten older, I realize that I do, I just don't always see where the connections lie, like my one mpreg story that was basically about me and my cancer. *laughs*

I have an online writing partner that gives me a lot of the same creative boost/kick in the ass as a writing group, though I do wish I had something in meatspace, too.
