tommygirl: (the spork)

I really love when I bring up something environmental and people give me weird looks. I stopped at the supermarket on my way into work and I use the canvas reuseable bags. I picked another one up.

Cashier: So you want to use these instead?
Me: that's the point of them
Cashier: oh... (stares at me) okay then...

First, they sell the canvas bags right there in the supermarket. I can't be the first to actually USE them. Second, you'd think I was Ed Begley Jr. talking about riding a stationary bicycle to generate enough energy to toast my bread with the way this cashier was looking at me. Good Lord. It's a canvas bag not a solar-paneled car. It's something small that I can do so that trees don't have to die for the paper kind and so landfills don't have to be further overrun with plastic.

And this isn't everyone. It's mostly my mother who claims I'm a hippy zealot because I get mad at people who have to light up their whole house for Christmas (energy crisis should not mean making your house visible from Mars - and it's ugly) and yell at her all the time about how much water/energy/etc she wastes.

Oh lord -- I once went to Target and bought one of the reusable shopping bags they have there (I have a collection in my trunk now, it's getting ridiculous), and the cashier rang it up and . . . put it in a plastic bag.

*facepalm*

I've had that happen too. Or when i first started getting the canvas bags, when I didn't have enough room in it, the cashier then did the paper & plastic as if to make up for it.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area, so I'm pretty assiduous about recycling - and my roomie looks at me weird when I point out to him that the cans he want to throw away are RECYCLABLE. Or the plastic bottles. Or the newspapers. Shyah, you'd think he'd never even HEARD of recyling. Kids these days...

The thing that irks me is how over here, the two big supermarket chains are really pushing the save the planet thing and making out to be so environmentally conscious. And yet you walk into the fruit and veg department in one of their stores and everything is wrapped in plastic! What's the point of touting yourself as being an environmentally aware conglomerate if all you fresh food is over-packaged in the sort of materials that have done so much damage to the planet in the first place?
