So still playing catch up on this, but I'm going to try to stick with it.

Day 3 - In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1.  Learn to cook more.  I hate cooking.  It's such a hassle after working a long day and for the past four months, I feel irritated by it because I can barely I feel like I just waste more than I actual ingest.  But I really need to learn to cook the way I can bake.

2.  Sleeping - I need to get my sleeping back in check.  I need to use meditation and stop with the electronics close to bed.  I know exactly what I need to's a mater of doing it.

3.  Fannish-goal - Write more.  Rec again.  Just be around more than I have been the past few years.  I needed to focus on myself for awhile in the real world.  It was important to do, but now I'd like to get that fannish fun back too.

tommygirl: (Default)
Don't worry. I'm not going to spam my friends list. I figure I would just do two today to get the ball rolling. And I'm avoiding doing some of my work. After this, I really need to focus on trying to create some gifts for [community profile] fandom_stocking

Day 2: In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This was hard for me to narrow down because I'd say there were a few that changed my life. Like I read the book Outsiders when I was ten and I adored it. Every year until my late twenties, I would read that book at least once a year. I gave a copy to my little bit when she was ten because that book was just something special to me.

That said, I think the thing that really changed my life was the broadway play, Rent. I was a Renthead. I've seen the show an obscene amount of times. I got to know the cast and the crew. I stood in the lines with other fellow Rentheads before it went to the lottery for the cheap, good tickets. And I walked away with lifelong friends because of that show. It's weird to me that it's been twenty years, but a lot of those same people that I met because of a shared love of a musical that just clicked with us...they're still in my life, still some of my best friends. And I can't imagine my life without any of them.
tommygirl: (captain america - steve & bucky)
So I figure one way to get my posting more and reconnecting with my fannish side might be to take part in the snow-flake challenge. I'll be playing a little catch up for the first few days, so I'll probably try to do more than one until I'm on schedule, but it's a start.

Day One... )

tommygirl: (avengers - tony)
I just received my assignment, so I figured it was time to post my Dear Yuletide Author letter.

Dear Yuletide Author:

Let me start with a tremendous thank you and I'm so excited. The fact that you were willing to write one of these fandoms is wonderful and no matter what, I know I'll love whatever you come up with.

Read more... )Now I shall go start pondering what I'm gonna write.
tommygirl: (jessica jones - jess)
I went ahead and signed up for [community profile] trope_bingo

my card is below link )

It's more attempts in my quest to write more. I've been doing fairly well recently...the past two weeks I've mostly been working on some original stuff and a few ficlets I owe people still from fandom stocking.
tommygirl: (jessica jones - jess)
I got my assignment for the [community profile] ante_up_losers Fanworks Exchange and realized I should go write my Dear Creator letter that just had a placeholder. I figured I've read enough fic in this world that maybe it's time to try my hand at it. Also, since I'm trying to complete the 75,000 words this year, I figure having projects with deadlines might help me along with that.   Love some of the prompts I saw on the Dear Creator letter for my recipient so that's good.

I also got my picture for [ profile] picfor1000 and excited to write that.  Just need to pic my fandom - what am I feeling everyone?  Ideas?

I went to see Star Wars again with my sister the other day and I still quite enjoy it. That is all I shall say in case people still haven't seen it. Even when we went the other day the theater was still packed.

I also finished Making a Murderer on Netflix because my co-worker kept yelling at me to watch it since I love the Serial podcast. I really shouldn't have watched it because it just made me angry about some of the crap that went down.

thoughts on Making a Murderer - spoilers? )

Oscar nominations are out and I've seen four of the eight already:  Martian (loved), Spotlight (good but depressing as hell), Mad Max (I was so confused - I had never seen any of the other Mad Max movies and my friend insisted I see and Tom Hardy, so sure...but I spent the first half of the movie going "what is going on?"), and the Big Short (I had read the book and the movie does a good job of sort of breaking down the whole thing - it's just depressing because nothing has changed).

I still need to see The Revenant, Room, Brooklyn and Bridge of Spies.

Finally caught back up on Arrow - I forced myself to do it before I could watch the crossover Flash episode so I wouldn't be I'm caught up on both of those now.  Still behind on Empire and Gotham.   And just waiting (impatiently) for Walking Dead to return.

Currently in my Netflix/Amazon streaming I've been rewatching Stargate Atlantis with the goal to actually make it through the end of season four and five, which I had never finished.  And then I plan to move onto Supernatural.  Last episode I saw was the premiere of Season Eight.   Considering how much I used to love that show, it's kinda sad that I can't always muster up the urge to go back.  But I'm hoping once I do, I'll get sucked in and get through it.  Last time around I had stopped watching at start of season six and then finally decided before season eight to try to get caught up...ended up zipping through the episodes.

Okay, back to work to get done.  Feeling very sore from my workout this morning and contemplating what to do for lunch because I didn't bring anything and this way leads to madness.  I might just run to Whole Foods and grab something.

tommygirl: (burn notice - fi)
Dear Creator:

I apologize for the delay in putting this up.  Work got away from me this week.  I'd remember to do it when I wasn't near a computer and then forget when I was.  SO yes, sorry about that.

First of all, thank you for creating something for me.  I know I will totally love it and adore it because it involves the Losers and really how can one not think about Jake Jensen and smile?  (Or is that just me?)

I'm on Archive of Our Own as [ profile] tommygirl  - I also have a livejournal as [ profile] storydivagirl

I'm a pretty easy to please kind of gal, but below are some things I like and such to provide some guidance.  Use as little or as much as you want.  This is more geared to fic, so if that's not what I'm receiving, no worries.  As far as icons or graphics would go, that is not something I'm good at making and will just be in awe of the talent involved in doing it.

Things I love in fic:  banter, competence (especially when it's Jensen and he still manages to get into trouble despite his mad abilities), hurt/comfort, possessiveness (without it turning creepy/stalker), and I'm totally a fluff/schmoop girl.  I don't mind angst if it has a happy ending or at least a hopeful ending.

If it goes the way of slash:  I love jealousy leading to fun times, established relationships dealing with issues, taking care of each other, silent communication, never giving up on each other...I'm really a girl all about the you-and-me-til-the-end-of-the-world

Aside from the main do nots in my sign-up, I'm not really a huge fan of the type of AUs where they are cowboys or in high school or work at a coffeeshop.  I'm okay with canon divergence and crossovers and other things...but those types of AUs where they tend to be other people than who they are just isn't my cup of tea.

Some prompt ideas (again, use as much or little of this as you want):

1)  I'm totally a fan of Jensen gets hurt/taken/written off for dead and Cougar goes into full-blown get-him-back-at-whatever-costs and the scary side of Cougar comes out...only to then be balanced when he finds Jensen and he's protective, gentle and completely there.

2)  I love getting together fics, but I would love even more the rocky getting together...where they are and then one or both freaks out and it stops (even though why?  you love each other, idiots), and something happens to kind of force the issue (one gets hurt, Pooch and the others are sick of dealing with it, whatever you like).

3)  Jealous Cougar.   And him being an idiot about it.

4)  If this goes the Gen route, I love the friendship between Jensen and Cougar.  How they always have each other's backs, no matter what.  I love the team dynamics.  I love Jensen forcing Cougar out of his shell and Cougar forcing Jensen to step back.  I love that despite how much everyone on the team gets annoyed with Jensen, they would all do anything for him and he would do the same in return.

4)  And just to throw ideas out there...Crossovers - Okay, and yeah, this one is just because my brain always goes to these places with any of Chris Evans works.  Crossing him over with another character he's played as something that happens before/after the comics or movie  (Jake Jensen = Steve Rogers or Jake Jensen = Johnny Storm or Jake Jensen - Colin O'shea - you get the idea).  Or even having Jake think he's lost everything, wants to start completely over and takes up life on Pegasus Galaxy with SGA or becomes a hunter Supernatural style or goes to work for Tony Stark...and Cougar finds him eventually (because Cougar would always find him).

Anyway, thank you very much!  Sorry for the delay in posting and know that I will love anything.  I hope this helps, not hinders.

tommygirl: (Default)
Hope everyone had a good holiday. Mine was quiet. I finally got to see Star Wars and I enjoyed it a great deal. Even my sister liked it, and she usually just rolls her eyes at me.

Yuletide is live and I got two really wonderful Losers stories (because is there ever enough Cougar and Jensen? Nope) and the person I wrote for seemed to really like the story I wrote.

We've got another wonderful year of [community profile] fandom_stocking underway and I went through today to start noting anyone I could try to write some stories for.  I tend to just go with the fandom/pairing/thought that clicks at any moment and fill a stocking that way, but if you're playing along, please leave me a link to your stocking in case I missed it.

If anyone is interested, mine is here.

Hoping to do some more writing this week as I'm off from work and not traveling around.  I decided to take some of my large number of hours off from work to sit around, catch up on all things movies & tv and such...

I still read people's posts, but I'm terrible about writing or commenting.  The same with things like tumblr and twitter.  I'll read, but don't post that often.  It's like I'm just that lazy.

tommygirl: (avengers - cap)
Happy New Year everyone! I hope it was a great holiday season. Busy and lazy at the same time is how my vacation has been.

I wanted to do a quick drive-by post to see if any of you have stockings for fandom stocking and if you could link me! I'm going through to do some writing and filling of other items.

If you're interested, mine is here -
tommygirl: (angel - jazz hands)
I just saw that [community profile] fandom_stocking has gone live! Awesome! If you're taking part and your stocking goes live, please leave me the link. Get started as soon as I can on filling this year (or so I say every year and then two days before I rush around putting things together).

I've hit a bit of a brick wall with my Nanowrimo story, so hopefully this will keep me writing through this month and next...

It's time for yuletide again! Super excited! And below is my long-winded yuletide letter. Take one year off of the challenge and suddenly I felt confused and overwhelmed by my sign-up and letter. Oh my brain is a scary place.

I do love all the fandoms I requested!

Here is the letter - hope it helps! )

I'm excited (and slightly panicked as always) to see what my assignment will be.

tommygirl: (johnny)
Saw this on a few people's journals and it's Friday, so why not?

Put a number in the comments and I’ll answer accordingly. The mission for those of us who answer the questions, should we accept it, is to stay positive about our writing and ourselves, but to also be fair about our shortcomings.

1. Of the fic you’ve written, of which are you most proud?
2. Favorite tense
3. Favorite POV
4. What are some themes you love writing about?
5. What inspires you to write?
6. Thoughts on critique
7. Create a character on the spot... NOW!
8. Is there a character you love writing for the most? The least? Why?
9. A passage from a WIP
10. What are your strengths in writing?
11. What are your weaknesses in writing?
12. Anything else that you want to know... (otherwise known as Fill in the Blank)

I'm sitting in the jury duty waiting room today.  lets see if my record remains of always making it to the juror's box before being dismissed.  well i hope im dismissed as i have too much to do rto serve on a jury.  i get that its important but so is my paycheck.

anyway im trying to entertain myself. i have my tablet, iphone and a few books.  hopefully it will pass quickly.

i hope y'all and everyone you love is safe after the horrible storms.

Because one of the my goals for the year is to make time for fun, fannish things and then I saw others talking about trope bingo ([community profile] trope_bingo) and I had to sign up

My Trope Bingo Card )
tommygirl: (avengers - cap)
I kept meaning to do this after I completed my yuletide sign-up, but then I would get distracted and then last week when the assignments went out - hurricane hit and things were crazed.

So I apologize for the delay in getting this up. And, as always, use as much or little of this as you wish.

Dear yuletide writer:

First off, thank you so much for undertaking this. I hope you know how much I look forward to this every year and how it would be impossible to disappoint me as I love all the fandoms and characters and I know whatever comes about will be great. Second, again I apologize for the delay in posting this. Mother Nature and procrastination are hard things to overcome.

Anyway, please use as much/little of this letter as you would like. It's to help you, so if you find it's causing more issues than assistance, pay me no nevermind.

General things I love in fic: schmoop, hurt/comfort that leads to happy ending, banter (I love banter!), protective behavior (but not to crazy levels), characters that behave like the characters would/should

Things I tend to veer away from: non-con, rape, torture, death fic, AUs that are like "x & y in the 1800's", mpreg. I'm okay with dark if I'm left with hope at the very least.

Fandom 1 - New Girl
My request: I totally ship Jess and Nick and love both their friendship and the idea of it simply evolving into something more. I also love the idea of Jess/Schmidt that happens in a spur of the moment that leads to both Nick and Cece freaking out, Winston questioning life, and both Jess and Schmidt trying to make it something more than a random hook-up because they're friends. Mostly, I'd love anything with jess interacting with the boys.

While I do ship Nick/Jess, I mostly just love the dynamic not only between the two of them, but all the roommates. They all love and annoy one another in the most wonderful ways. And as I mentioned above, I think Jess/Schmidt could be so much fun so long as it's pretty obvious to everyone in the world that they would never last.

Fandom 2 - Common Law
My Request:
I love Wes and Travis' relationship. I love that they begrudging go to therapy together, but seem to slowly get AHA moments out of it (usually followed up with lots of bickering like the old married couple that they are). I love that they both rip one another apart at times, but totally have faith that the other has his back (and I loved it when Wes said, "He's my partner. I can say that. You don't know him.") I would love them as a couple or just partners/friends/whatever.

Oh the love/hate, you're-sorta-the-most-important-in-my-life-and-why-god feelings that Wes and Travis have for one another. I loved them from the first few minutes of the pilot and that love grew throughout season one. Slash or gen with them is great (though I do ship them) as long as it's them. They should still bicker and get on each other's nerves, but always have each other's backs.

Fandom 3 - Mindy Project
My request:
I love this show! It's so much fun. I love how much Mindy brings her love of romantic comedies into her life. I love that she is trying to create this new persona and her bickering with Danny, even though they both have this mutual frustrated respect for one another. And yeah, I admit it. I totally ship the idea of future Mindy/Danny, once they've both grown a bit more.

This show is one of my new favorite things. I love Mindy. She's an awesome character. And I love her interactions with everyone, especially Danny. I totally see Mindy/Danny happening in their future, but I'm not sure how it would work now. It could also be really fun to see them make those steps from the sorta-friends they are now to more - I picture lots of freaking out from both of them.

Fandom 4 - Cal Leandros - Rob Thurman
My request:
I love these books. Mostly, I adore the relationship, in all its co-dependent dysfunction that makes up Cal and Niko's sibling relationship. I love that they both know it's not necessarily the healthiest, but it's what they know and trust. Anything around the two of them, based in what's happened in the books or just a random scene from their lives would be great.

Not much more to say than above. I love Cal and I love Niko. I lvoe their relationship and how they would do anything for one another, whether the other one would want them to or not. If you want it to be Cal/Niko, that's fine, but I love their devotions just the way they are in the books. And I have to admit, it would be fun to see Niko's perspective on some of the things, especially during Blackout.

Please remember, all of these are suggestions. Go with what inspires you and I'll be happy. I mean it when I say you can't go wrong. I know I will love whatever is written (as there is nowhere near enough fic for any of these fandoms. If you're looking for examples of my writing, I have it posted to my livejournal (storydivagirl) and dreamwidth (tommygirl) - just look to the tags - and I've started to archive it at the Archive of Our Own as well - I also post recs at [community profile] polyfandomrecs if that will help you with the type of things I tend latch onto.

Thanks again! I hope you have fun with this! Now I shall bid you adieu in order to catch up on emails and begin plotting my own yuletide response as the annual moment of panic sets in.

Lots of love!

So I love podcasts. They help keep me sane, especially when stuck in traffic, and some of my favorite people have them.

Anyway, I was super excited when Doug Benson had Chris Evans on for the game/podcast at Doug Loves Movies but then I found out that the new episode of Girl on Guy with Aisha Tyler is Jared Padalecki and the latest Nerdist is Joseph Gordon-Levitt.   This makes me super-dooper happy.  And really, if you're not listening to any of these podcasts, check them out.  Nerdist is my favorite, but I do love Doug Benson and Aisha Tyler along with Marc Maron and such...

tommygirl: (sherlock holmes - blowup)
This looks fun! And to find others to squee with about this show other than poor [profile] larah33 getting my random emails, might be a good idea!

Once Upon a Time first season cast with 'Once Upon a Time Friending Meme' as the text below the characters
tommygirl: (castle - rick & alexis (hug))
I saw this at both [personal profile] medie and [personal profile] musesfool's journals and I thought it might just get me kinda-maybe-writing again something that sees the light of day.

Pick a trope from this list and provide a fandom/pairing that I'm familiar with, and I'll tell you something about the story I'd write for that combination (i.e. write a snippet from the story or write not!fic or tell you the title and summary for the story I would write)

1. genderswap
2. bodyswap
3. drunk!fic
4. huddling for warmth
5. pretending to be married
6. secretly a virgin
7. amnesia
8. cross-dressing
9. forced to share a bed
10. truth or dare
11. historical AU
12. accidental-baby-acquisition
13. apocalypse fic
14. telepathy
15. High School/College

mostly my old school fandoms are the best (SPN, Sports Night, Veritas, etc), but if I know the fandom, I'm willing to give it a try.

Oh and I must warn that I'm terrible, terrible with high school/college AUS, but again, I'll think of something.

And randomly, I really need some new icons, preferably Captain America...hhhmmm...

Yeah, so much for accomplishing a lot of work today. Heh.
tommygirl: (hawaii five-0 - steve smug)
I'd been meaning to do this all last week but kept getting distracted. since I just saw that I received my assignment and pinch hits have started, I realized I better get this letter up.

Dear yuletide author:

Hi! Thank you for undertaking writing in one of these fandoms. There isn't a lot of fic in most of them and I will love anything that you make. I know that some authors love more ideas and some authors don't - so take as little or as much of this into account as you need to. I know I will love whatever is written because each of these fandoms is amazing and wonderful and filled with characters that I love. And that you offered to write them means you are awesome.

General things I love in fic: schmoop, hurt/comfort that leads to happy ending, banter (I love banter!), protective behavior (but not to crazy levels), characters that behave like the characters

Things I tend to veer away from: non-con, rape, torture, death fic, AUs that are like "x & y in the 1800's", mpreg. I'm okay with dark if I'm left with hope at the very least.

Fandom 1 - New Girl
My request: I would love a fic that involves all the roommates in some manner. I'd also love a fic that has Nick/Jess or deals with the obvious attraction between the two of them.

So yes, I would love Nick/Jess. I think they're full of possibilities and they obviously care about each other even if neither of them gets that yet. I'd love them figuring it out with the help of Schmidt and Winston. But again, I'm just a huge fan of the dynamic between all the roommates. I love that Jess exasperates them and yet they are completely charmed by her. (And they've got the coolest apartment ever).

Fandom 2 - Against the Wall
My Request: I love sibling fic and these siblings are so much fun. I would love the brothers all being overprotective and worried about Abby in some way.

I have a huge love of the sibling relationship, especially when it involves protective older brothers. And this show is so perfect with that...I love Abby - she's strong and smart and does what she knows she has to, even if it's not what other people want for her. And I love her brothers, who might be pissed with her, but also have her back. So yeah, sibling fic would be fun - whether it's Abby getting into trouble on the job or her dating someone or whatever, I would just love to see Steve, Donnie and Richie going into full-on big brother mode.

Fandom 3 - Switched at Birth
My request: I would love Bay/Emmett. I think they're adorable and fun together. Basically though, I would love an Bay-centric fic as I love her.

I did not expect to love this show. I watched it because I was bored and it was on...and I loved it. I especially loved Bay and Emmett separately and then they got together and it was so cute and awesome. I love them together. I think they're both good and bad for each other in all the ways that teenage love should be. I would really love some happy, fun Bay/Emmett fic, but I'd also be cool with a Bay story that involves her relationship with her dad or either of her moms or Toby. i'm not a huge fan of Daphne, so as little of her as possible would be great.

Fandom 4 - Falling Skies
My request: The family dynamic. It would be interesting to see how the boys react to what happened in the season finale. Or a fic that deals with the early days of the invasion or even before the invasion.

Another summer show that I loved and adored and I can't believe we have to wait until next summer for more. I'd be up for a lot of different things with this fandom as long as it includes the family dynamic and how much they all love and take care of each other. I love that as hard as it is for Tom, he lets Hal and Ben do the things they need to because the world has changed for them. I'm intrigued by Ben's abilities and how that scares both Tom and Hal. I'm curious about what their lives were like before the invasion or right after the initial invasion but before we meet them in the pilot.

Please remember, all of these are suggestions. Go with what inspires you and I'll be happy. if you're looking for examples of my writing, I have it posted to my livejournal and dreamwidth (tommygirl) - just look to the tags - and I've started to archive it at the Archive of Our Own as well -

Thank you in advance! I can't wait! And now i'm off to begin the annual yuletide routine of rewatching canon, panicking and writing.

Lots of love!
